We Are: Mark and Lynne Faille. We have 3 children, Dylan, Taylor & Stacie. Some of their duties are tractor work (field plowing and hay cutting and raking), cattle rotation/observation, pig/chicken/calf care, and they all work in our retail store serving our loyal customers.
Our Philosophy: We are a family owned and operated farm who believe in allowing animals to do exactly what God intended them to do — graze peacefully and grow naturally — with minimal interference from us.
Our Farm: Our main farm is located at 1932 Route 206 in Skillman, New Jersey. We lease this entire 220 acre farm from Dave McAlpin. We are certified through Global Organic Alliance and hold organic certificates to reflect the beef, veal, pork, chicken, pasture and hay that we produce.
In May of 2009, we purchased a 145 acre farm in La Crosse, VA. There are some pictures of our new farm in the photo gallery. Our goal is to expand our operation and be able to supply more of the southern states. The warmer climate and almost year round grass availability are the major reasons for our selection. We had our first bull calf on 8/13/09. His name is "CC" (Pictures of the southern herd are coming soon.)
Cattle feed on organically managed fields without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. As a result of this, they grow at a normal rate, as opposed to an accelerated rate such as when locked in a feed lot and fed only grain. Our cattle are never fed grain. Organic hay is harvested all summer long and stored for their consumption throughout the winter months.
We are Animal Welfare Approved on both farms. Visit Animalwelfareapproved.org for more information.
Chickens are housed in bottomless, portable pens that are placed on organic pasture and moved twice a day. Although we would love to allow them to roam outside of the portable pens, predators, such as fox and coyote, make it impossible for them to survive. In addition to fresh grass, sunshine and bugs, all poultry receive organic feed. Their chicken feed comes from an organic feed mill which contains exactly what their bodies need to mature. All feed is free of any genetically modified organisms (GMO's.) The feed mill is, of course, certified organic as well, and they are processed at Griggstown Quail Farm.
Pork is raised on certified organic pasture. They roam free in 13-14 acre paddock, eating free choice and organic feed. They have access to shade, shelter and wallowing holes at all times. There are no gestation crates and no farrowing crates. Sows and piglets live in roomy, indoor stalls in the winter, and roomy, airy outdoor stalls in clement weather. We raise Berkshire, Duroc & Hampshire hogs. We use natural breeding and believe in letting the mothers raise their young in as natural an environment that we can provide.
Processing for Veal, Beef and Pork takes place at a certified organic butcher in New Jersey. For more information, visit www.bringhurstmeats.com.
Our products are sold wholesale, as well as retail at our on-farm store to members. We also sell to quite a few restaurants in New Jersey. Please visit our “Restaurant” tab for more informationl. Chickens are sold as whole birds only. They are sold “to order” and are seasonal due to our climate. (Visit the chicken tab for information on our 2010 chicken club.) Beef, Veal and Pork are sold by the cut or whole or sides.
